Buyer Tip: Buyers frequently let their emotions regarding type of vehicle, model of vehicle, options, dealer add-ons determine which vehicle they purchase verse what they need and can afford.  The buyer should focus on the vehicle which meets their needs not

current rebates and financing available.

Before a buyer starts visiting dealerships they should determine what vehicle(s) they can afford based on a prioritization of the following: 1) Price of the vehicle, 2) Use of the vehicle and 3) Attributes and Characteristics of the vehicle.

Price of the Vehicle

Use the net price determined from How Much Vehicle Can You Afford.

Use of Vehicle

How will you use the vehicle e.g. business use, commuting to work, family demands, off-road use, mountain or snow travel, short or long trips, towing, hauling,

Attributes and Characteristics

What do you like and dislike about your current vehicle(s). What attributes and characteristics do you want on your new vehicle.  There is a checklist under Checklists, Listings and Forms titled Vehicle Attributes and Characteristics Checklist which can be used as a guide.

Determining What Vehicle(s) You Can Afford

The following steps take approximately one hour.

  1. Fill out the checklist titled Vehicle Attributes and Characteristics Checklist.
