3.2.4 Dealership Lot Walk Around

Once they buyer decides to negotiate the purchase of the vehicle they should review the vehicle for damage before going inside the dealership.

Inspect the vehicle for the following …

  • Windows for scratches, pits and cracks
  • Body for “lot damage”, dents and dings
  • Loose trim
  • Paint for scratches and pits
  • Upholstery for scratches, cuts and stains
  • Knobs or buttons on all switches
  • Sticking knobs and buttons
  • Misaligned body panels
  • Doors, hood, trunk not opening properly
  • Squeaks, rattles and other noises

Buyer Tip: Any damaged or missing items found should be written down. The buyer should have the sales person note these items on the form they are filling out regarding the transaction.

Buyer Tip: The repair or replacement of these items should be included in the negotiated purchase price of the vehicle. After the purchase price of the new vehicle has been agreed to the buyer should ensure the sales person prepares “Due Bills” so these items can be repaired or replaced later.

Dealership Trick:  As the buyer walks around the vehicle the sales person will sometimes roll down the window which has the price sticker.  This is to keep the buyer from looking at the sticker before going into the dealership.  Once in the dealership the sales person will sometimes write down a higher amount than shown on the price sticker.  If successful the sales person will have the buyer begin negotiating from a higher price.

Buyer Tip: Always write down the MSRP of the vehicle before going into the dealership.

Buyer Tip:  Never negotiate the price of a new vehicle which does not have a Mulroney sticker displayed on its window. The Mulroney sticker is a Federally required vehicle price sticker which must be displayed in the window of all new vehicles.
