3.2.3 Test Drive Demo

Dealership Lot Demo

The buyer has now identified a vehicle(s) in which they are interested.  They have reviewed the vehicles attributes and characteristics while it is parked in the dealership lot.  It is now time to see if the vehicle has the ride, driving response and driving comfort they want.

During the Test Drive Demo the buyer should review the following areas:

  • Comfort while Driving
  • Vehicle Responsiveness
  • Visibility
  • Safety Features
  • Interior
  • Accessibility to Controls
  • Accessibility to Features

The test drive should include driving on the types of roads the buyer will be driving their new vehicle e.g. freeway, city streets, country roads.  The buyer should also drive on several types of road surfaces e.g. well surfaced roads, rough surfaced roads, rock or dirt roads, if available.

If possible, the buyer should take the test drive with your spouse or a friend.  The buyer should have them drive a portion of the test drive so they can view the positive and negative characteristics and attributes of the vehicle from the passenger seat.

If the buyer needs to take a second drive don’t be afraid to ask.  Purchasing a vehicle is a big investment.

The buyer should ensure they have all their questions answered before they decide to negotiate the purchase of the vehicle.

Buyer Tip:  After the test drive the buyer should never feel obligated to buy or even negotiate the purchase of the vehicle if they don’t like the vehicle or are not ready to purchase the vehicle.

Buyer Tip:  If you have a friend or acquaintance that has purchased the same vehicle, ask them if you can drive their vehicle. This will give you more time to inspect to vehicle in a more buyer friendly environment.  Also ask them for their opinion of the positive and negative characteristics and attributes of their vehicle.

There is a checklist under Checklists, Listings and Forms titled Test Drive Demo Checklist which can be used as a guide.  This checklist is not all inclusive.  The buyer should add additional items which are important to them.
