1.2.0 Buyer Information Folder

Before a buyer visits a dealership they should research the vehicle, vehicle options, add-ons, vehicle pricing, trade-in values and their financing options.  The buyer’s research should be included in a Buyer Information Folder.  The Buyer Information Folder should be taken to the dealership when the buyer negotiates the purchase of their next vehicle.

Buyer Question: Why should I take a Buyer Information Folder to the dealership?

Comment: Buying a new or used vehicle is a long, tiring and emotional process.  Nobody can remember everything they found when researching their vehicle(s).  During the purchasing process the sales person will try to put doubt in the buyer’s mind regarding the facts.  If the buyer doesn’t have their Buyer Information Folder they may not be able to remember the information they found during their research.

Buyer Question: What information should I take to the dealership?

Comment: There are two types of information you should take to the dealership i.e. the Dealer Version and the Buyer Version.  The Dealer version will include the Drivers License of the buyers whose names will be on the title and on the vehicle loan papers, Proof of Insurance, Title “Pink Slip” of the Trade-in, Current Registration for your Trade-in, and your Checkbook.

Buyer Tip: Make copies of each of the above, except the Checkbook, to give to the salesman when they require them.  This will prevent you from being held hostage if a deal can not be worked out.

Buyer Question: Should I take the “Dealer Version” information to the dealership?

Comment: Absolutely…but keep reading.  If you haven’t started collecting the Buyer Version information you are still several days away from purchasing your next vehicle.

An old German adage states “Knowledge is Power”.  The corollary when buying a new or used vehicle is “Always know more about your situation than the dealership.”

There is an example of a Buyer Information Folder under Checklists, Listings and Forms titled Buyer Information Folder which can be used as a guide.

Buyer Question: Should I include all the items listed in the index?

Comment: If the items listed in the index seem like a lot of information, ask yourself , “How good of a deal do I want on my next vehicle?”
